Get ready to experience public transport like never before, with trains, trams, buses and taxi’s all in the one location. Giving you a unique opportunity to familiarise yourself with the vehicles, meet our lovely Public Transport Team and learn about accessibility features.


The Victorian Government is working hard to ensure our transport network is inclusive and accessible for all Victorians. Whether you're a beginner or an experienced user, this event is perfect for you.

Try Before You Ride events help people of all abilities feel more confident when using the public transport system. This includes people with accessibility requirements, parents with children and seniors.


What to expect:

  • Practice getting on and off our trains, trams, buses, and accessible taxis
  • Learn about and familiarise yourself with accessibility features
  • Speak with public transport staff and organisations about various programs
  • Site familiarisation tours of Southern Cross Station


Accessibility services will be provided by Travellers Aid on the day:

  • Mobility assistance
  • Personal care
  • Quiet space
  • Translation services (upon request)


On the Day:

The registration desk will be located at Southern Cross Station between the two yellow pods and near the Network Bar opposite platform 2A.

Keep a look out for event signage and staff in white vests to help you navigate the event.

DTP Privacy Notice for the use of Eventbrite

Information you provide to the Department of Transport and Planning (DTP) in the event registration form will include personal information as defined under the Privacy and Data Protection Act 2014 (Vic) (the PDP Act).

Purpose of collection

We are collecting your personal information to process and manage your registration to participate in the Try Before You Ride event (the Event), where applicable. We also collect it to update our mailing list which distributes emails with news, events and updates relating to accessible public transport access.

How will we collect and store the information?

  • We are using Eventbrite Inc. (Eventbrite), a third party located in the USA, to collect your personal information through Eventbrite’s website.
  • Eventbrite will store your personal information in a password-protected account that may only be accessed by our authorised officers. Eventbrite may use your personal information for various purposes stated in Eventbrite’s Privacy Policy, including marketing. You may contact Eventbrite about opting out of marketing communications by following the instructions in their Privacy Policy.

What we collect

The information we collect from you through Eventbrite includes your:

  • Full name and email address

It is optional to provide your consent to be photographed and/or filmed at the event.

When requesting accessibility assistance or support on the day of the event, you may disclose health and sensitive information. Providing this type of information about yourself is optional, however, if you choose to provide this information to us, you consent to the collection of this information and its use, that is, to provide you with the appropriate assistance on the day of the event.

Who is Eventbrite?

Eventbrite is a ticketing and registration platform based in California, USA. You can find Eventbrite’s Privacy Policy on the Eventbrite website.

Please note, Eventbrite is not bound by the Information Privacy Principles under the PDP Act (the IPPs). If you consent to Eventbrite collecting your personal information on our behalf, we will not be liable for any act by Eventbrite which is a breach of the IPPs and you will not have any remedies under the PDP Act by any act by Eventbrite.

Eventbrite’s Privacy Policy states they may use your personal information for internal business purposes as well as marketing and advertising purposes. They take what they believe to be reasonable steps to protect personal information collected from loss, misuse, unauthorised use, access, inadvertent disclosure, alteration and destruction. You may also request that Eventbrite correct, update or delete your personal information by contacting Eventbrite directly.

The event commences at 10.30am. Join us anytime and come and go as you please. The event concludes at 2.00pm.

Why do we need an event?

The event supports people of all abilities to practice getting on and off different transport modes, build confidence and talk to staff to learn about accessibility features. At the event there will be different trains, trams, buses, coaches and wheelchair accessible taxis to try.

Will there be parking at the event?

What if I have specific accessibility requirements for the day?

When booking your free ticket online, you will be asked to supply any specific requirement you may have if you wish to share them. Alternatively, you can email us directly to discuss at community@transport.vic.gov.au.

What if I don't wish to be photographed?

When you register for your free ticket online, you will be given an option to consent to being photographed and videoed. If you choose 'no' from the dropdown menu, please pick up a red lanyard upon check-in on the day. The red lanyard will make you easily identifiable to the photographer.

Who is involved in this event?

Metro Trains, Yarra Trams, V/Line, and Kinetic, co-ordinate this event in partnership with Department of Transport and Planning, Travellers Aid and Safe Transport Victoria. Silver Top Taxis are part of this event, giving attendees an opportunity to try boarding a wheelchair accessible taxi.
